I was out sick yesterday, and I mean, I barely got off the couch or bed yesterday. I spent most of it cuddled up with our younger golden doodle who is basically a stuffed animal when it comes to that. She will just lie down with/near/on you and stay. It was a stomach bug but mostly just a lot of discomfort and little else. I was able to watch a little TV but developed a massive headache so I couldn’t even do that after a while. I did watch 2 episodes of Police Squad, which, if you watch Project Binky, it’s at least worth watching one episode... you’ll see. Or just check out some of the clips on youtube, the intro and outro(?) will suddenly make a lot more sense.
Anyway, here, have a picture of a sweet cabin we visited last weekend. It had a warm woodstove and hot chocolate (you just had to heat up the water), and this is on an enormous private forest preserve called Green Woodlands. A self-described “computer guy” named Bob Green (really) and his wife bought some 30,000 acres in the middle of NH and made 30 miles of XC ski trails with these cabins sprinkled throughout. Totally free and open to the public, it’s a mecca for those looking to escape the hustle-and-bustle of the typical small NH town of 3,000 people. But seriously, it’s astonishingly quiet out there, I love it.
The cabin:
The guy also has been building some mountain bike trails. 60 MILES so far, and more every year! It’s really incredible. I don’t know his story but of all the things you could do with seemingly unlimited funds, this is a pretty good one.
I’m trying not to move a lot today so I’m at my desk catching up on things for now.
How’s Oppo been?

Wow, what a beautiful spot.
I’m hoping something similar happens with all of Ted Turner’s land!
2,000,000 acres!
And an old coworker/friend of his owns even more!
“We’re working toward the same goal—to be stewards of the land and make sure it’s preserved for future generations,” says Turner.
But though their conservation ends may be the same, their means differ. “Ted’s idea of tradition is to go back to pre-European times,” says Malone. Turner famously poisoned a stretch of Cherry Creek—which runs through his Flying D Ranch in Montana—to rid it of the invasive brown and rainbow trout. (He replanted the stream with native cutthroat trout.) At Turner’s ranch bison roam free over land that’s been cleared of most signs of human habitation.
Malone, on the other hand, says, “I tend to be more willing to admit that human beings aren’t going away.” So he believes that trees can be harvested without damaging the ecology and wildlife. (“I’m not an extreme tree-hugger,” he says.) He will continue the sustainable forestry operation on the Maine and New Hampshire land (purchased from GMO Renewable Resources, a private equity firm). Malone is also looking at wind-power opportunities on the property and will keep the land open for public recreation, a Maine tradition. Malone takes the same “working farm” philosophy with his western properties, like the Bell Ranch, where he raises cattle and horses.
Malone wants to “break even” on his land, but there is more than economics involved. “There’s the emotional and intellectual aspect of walking the land and getting that sense of awe,” he says. “I own it, sort of, for my lifetime.”
Like Turner, he has plans to conserve most of it for beyond his lifetime, through perpetual conservation easements. “But I’m not going to kid myself and think that 500 years from now, with population growth, that the government won’t start putting people on the land,” he says. “But at least I tried.”

Holy hell that’s a lot of land. Well I think at least some of it will go into parkland or conservation.

“Who shot T wice? Jim ?”
“No Twice shot Jim, then I shot him”
“So you DID shoot Twice?”
“No, I only shot him once”

Random question, but since this guy is letting people into his private property, do you have to sign a waiver to use it?

Nope. New Hampshire has strong laws limiting the liability of private landowners that allow public recreational use. In fact, even though we don’t have “public” trails on our property, we get a 20% tax break on the area of our property that’s been set aside for conservation, so long as we allow public access for non-motorized activities like hiking and skiing.

Yesssss although I need to have a little fiberglass repair done on my boat that I’ve been trying to get done since Fall 2018. Long story short, I’m really hoping I can get that done before proper boating season this year.

Did you have a fever?
I’ve started watching Project Binky. I’m up to Episode 18. That guy has some mad skills. I was interested in how they started with a Cooper, then cut away 8 0% of it. If that was to be the plan all along, why not start out with a rustbucket? Tinworm ... LOL!

Very interesting, and different coming from the perspective of Texas where 95% of land is private. The places I’ve gone to ride that were on private land require y ou to sign a waiver. Even if you just want to hike you gotta sign the waiver.
Because of this there are a lot of secret and bandit trails.

Well... there are still kinda secret trails, depending how you look at it . There’s a local park owned by the town and there are MTB trails maintained by the local MTB club. They even have a trail map, but when you look at it, it covers about 25% of the trails that actually exist there, and that are regularly used.
It’s not that the other trails are illegal, but the club can’t claim them as their own - they’re outside the park’s land and maintained by the users . You’re just as free to use them as the mapped ones, but as an outsider, it would be really confusing - not to mention there are no signs outside the park’s land.

Mild fever, not much.
Project Binky is so satisfying to watch. They really want to do everything RIGHT, no matter how long it takes, which is so refreshing. Keep watching.
Actually there’s an episode where they answer questions like “why did you start with ____” but I think the question they get most often is why they started with one that was in such rough shape, to which they reply, “Because we were going to cut so much of it out anyway.”

It took me a while to figure that last bit out. I mean, how much ‘68 Mustang is there in Ken Block’s ‘68 Mustang?
I watch the title sequence video closely every time.
They’re fun to watch and it looks to me like they are genuine pals to each other.

Yeah, they are fun to watch. It’s another thing they mention in the AMA video, basically “are you ever going to finish” and their answer is, “Notice how we’re still friends? Yeah, it’ll take as long as it takes.”
On the opening sequence: i f you don’t know about Police Squad, watch this:

Does the dark-haired bloke do the video editing? I think it’s excellent and I always enjoy the music they use.

I’ve got a list to do once the weather heats up a bit. New fuel lines to hopefully solve the bulb priming issue, repack the axle bearings, annual motor tune up, new water pump..............

I’m not sure, but I’d guess they do their own editing. There are places on the web that will do that sort of thing for you, but they strike me as the type to want to do their own.

The “epilogue” as they call it, is from that show too - youtube has them too. The show is great, if you like that kind of humor. I guess Police Squad was cancelled after just 6 episodes but was the basis for the Naked Gun movies, which were, needless to say, quite successful.
